Spring is possibly the most beautiful season of the year. Perhaps it’s because it starts to get warm again or because there’s an inundation of smells and colours; in Maremma all this is even more wondrous.
In fact, in our opinion, Spring is the best season to come and enjoy the hills of this part of Tuscany. There are many things you can do here as the beautiful days roll in, or even when the weather isn’t perfect. The Terme di Saturnia are obviously the main attraction in the area and the 37° C water is perfect to balance the external temperature of 17/18° C, and to give you both physical and psychological well-being. Relaxing and salubrious dips at the Terme or the Mulino waterfall can be easily mixed with some visits to the nearby villages and other attractions in the area.
The villages we recommend are Montemerano (see previous post), Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano (the Tuff-stone towns), Magliano in Toscana at the heart of the Morellino di Scansano wine growing area, and Capalbio near the sea. Each of these villages guard their own particularities and uniqueness which makes visiting them delighting, special and surprising.
However, there are also other places that are great to visit in Spring; places sculpted by history yet immersed in Maremma’s blooming natural environment. Places like the Etruscan necropolis of Sovana or the Etruscan ruins at Vulci (on the road to Rome), Burano Lake or its neighbour Ansedonia, which is another wonderful area full of history dating back to the Etruscan/Romana town of Cosa.
Needless to say, it is also the perfect season to visit this territory on foot, horseback or bike, which are all perfect to really take in and enjoy the colours, smells and landscapes.
There are many events you can find if you come in March and April:
